January 30

January 30, 2017

Everyone
Where is the noise coming from during production?
We need to move the round table by Lady H’s before the rape scene, then return it again before the Maggie/Lady H/Edwin scene.
Step on lines at the end.
Start singing when red lights come on in the beginning
JoAnna, start hitting in tempo with song at the beginning.
Must listen to each other. Must connect – remember chairs.
Bar scene drug.
We must see the change in everyone’s journey.
No freezes – move slowly. In these scenes, use the facial expression you have had in the previous scene.
Don’t anticipate.
We must see everyone’s journey.
Think of two more places we can transition from laughter to crying or crying to laughter.
ARSE
Polly
Wear scarf like Ellen’s.
Lord will provide – take out meat.
Switch with another girl in sarnies scene.
Len
Laugh – slow down on the “protection” speech.
Girls
Shake Helena’s hand if she extends it to you – especially Kate and Annie
Fallen women – Lady H panics and tries to cover bare legs which should be dirty. Priscilla tries then dies laughing.
Step on lines at the end.
Connect, especially at the beginning.
React to Harry differently each time.
Leave it said differently. Women react differently each time.
Song needed to have more energy at the beginning.
Even though you may not like Lady H, you are amazed she is in Gutting shed.
React to Ellen taking Jim’s job.
We need to see you warm up to Lady H.
DO NOT SCREECH!!!
Men
Be stronger in your body.  Think of ways to be more dominant over the women. Help each other out.
Laugh at the women’s weaknesses whenever possible.
Chins up
Arthur – stand up straight. I think I need to find a better back brace.
Annie
Stage business – do you remember what Freida said.
We need to see your journey to become more like Ellen. How does it affect you when you see Ellen as you exit bar?
Master and Mistress
Kate
Maggie
At the beginning when Jim comes in, rush to help him.
Flirt with him.
Get mad at the girls for teasing him, especially Maggie.
Edwin
Acknowledge Arthur. Tip your hat.
Remember chairs with Lady H
Loved the faint.
People noises fainting and in rape scene.
Lady H
Edwin
Smell, then see the carnage in the slaughter house.
Man 1
Different voice. You’re quiet tonight gils.
Arthur
Remember conversation with Lady H in chairs- no pauses like we have done.
When Lady H says her last line give her a bad look.
We need to see the decisions you make.
Build in your scenes with Priscilla.
Wait until you are in light to speak.
Kate & Jim
Step on lines
Harry
Pat Annie’s bottom after yelling at Ellen
See a difference in you each time you enter.  Let the disgust, anger at the girls grow.
Be more upset when you figure out the girls are making fun of you.
Smile evilly.
WINK!
Lights
Have light on Priscilla and Harry entering Lady H’s house
A tad more light on lantern show. We need to see Edwin and Maggie.
Flash with thunder in rape scene.
Arthur and Edwin
Grunt and let’s hear breathing after encounters with women.
Lady H
Hand Priscilla a hankie when she cries.
Look at Edwin with the last line.
Did you hum?
Stage crew
Bruise makeup on Priscilla
NEED
Transition after rape scene
Stage lights
Turn light off Priscilla
See more of faces. Carly, just a dim light.
Kate
Be diligent with cross to Annie – watch for Helena’s gesture.
Great reacting to Lady H’s Bible reading.
Move toward light in magic show scene.
Harry and women
We must see tension when he enters.  We have to hate him and have our hearts cry with girls.
Annie & Ellen
Ellen and Maggie
Cheat out

How are these two scenes different?
Ellen and Maggie
Need to see both faces during this scene.
Maggie
Great job
Eady & Maggie
Great work. Amazing scene.
Priscilla
Shocked when in club for first time.
Ellen, Jim, Harry
Exiting needs people noises.

Everyone

Diction

Still need more people noises

People noises in bar scene.

People noises in lantern scene.  No one with exception of Lady H, Edwin, and Priscilla has seen this phenomenon.

Everyone, be sure you understand what you are saying and why you are saying this.  This is so important to judges.

For discussion – stage lights are amber to show the mood as well as age the set.  Would it show a difference to view the wealthy with a different hue?

Man 1

Louder and to audience – Gut girls is out.

Quiet tonight gals – louder and speak more downstage.  We probably need to reblock your cross.

Edwin

You need to be louder and deeper.  Your voice is unique and different from the others. Take advantage of this.

Louder and more angry with manhood line. Be angry at  your self and disappointed in your weakness.

Head up and your next times need to be different and more intimidating. Not believable – your reaction to Lady H’s the  airlessness.

Need to be more obvious with knife.

Audience needs to see your decision to offer Arthur a drink.  Listen to his lines and decide when to do it.

Fainting was good.

Arthur

Cheat out to the audience more when talking to others.

Be on time in your scenes.

Leave jacket on in house.

Take chains with you when you exit.

GG

Harry’s entrance – flinch, gasp, people noises

Be quieter when entering when Lady H and Priscilla have their prompt scene.

Step on Len’s line – now look girls

Born dead – people noises

When Ellen says organize – more PN

PN going to the club.

PN in bar.

PN in sarnies scene was good.

Hats – going to bar.  Ellen, wear your hat, then take it off when Maggie says she doesn’t know where people are or,

Could not hear or understand Maggie in we are all fallen women.

Stage lighting

No lights on scenes that are not the focus.

It cannot flicker. Do it manually and begin sitting backstage on Sunday.

Harry

Initially, you are trying to “woo” Annie. Don’t push her.  When you pass her as you exit behind Ellen, pause and look at her.

More facial expressions when you hear what girls are saying, especially – I heard we were all being laid off.  – the company has told you to keep this quiet. You are afraid that the gossip Ellen has heard will affect your job.

Hard to hear and understand you when you leave.

Lady H

Occasionally, pick up your dress or kick meat when you are in shed.

Great people noises.

Hands in pockets of knickers.

Research pens in Vic. England and we need to get you one.

Annie

More facial expressions when Lady H is in gutting shed.

When Ellen says I only lasted a day, you speak too quickly. Look more shocked.

Could not understand you when you are talking to Maggie – ask Grace.

Gasp and almost cry when Harry makes a move on you.

Maggie

When saying – we’re ladies – be more cocky and sexy

After your mom’s scene and your final line, down the beer.

More threatening to Edwin with knife. Hold it with both hands.

Go behind bar so we can see you when talking to Ellen.

Len

First bar scene – get it fixed in your head that you have a purpose exiting.

Be bigger.

Ellen

Be crying before the end of Annie’s story.

Light and Ellen

In Ellen/Annie scene, Ellen is not in the light. How can we fix this?

Eady

Angrier – God knows….

Throw the towel on the basket.

Exit angrier when speaking with Maggie.

Slow down.

Priscilla and Lady H

Priscilla stand up when you say, That’s just it, and Lady H prompts you to sit down.

Sound effects

 We need them.

Priscilla

May need to add black or gray to your purse.

Lady H and Kate

When mimicking Lady H, lady H moves her head to speak to all girls, Kate moves behind her to avoid being seen.

Ellen and Annie

Be more convincing when hugging

Ellen

Carry union papers with you.

Could not understand foreman line.

Last line needs to be more forceful.

Polly

Liverish – hold up liver

Vary your voice. It seems like you are always yelling.

Arthur and Edwin

Faster entrance into the bar so you can be holding drinks and Len can pay attention to the girls and not to you.

Kate

Lady Helena bigger than Lord T.

More arrogant and chin up in last line.

Arthur and Priscilla

We need to return your scene back to the original.

TO DO

More material in the fire.

Spray mop

Lady H’s hat on hatrack prior to girls entering club.

January 16

January 17, 2017

Everyone
If you did not READ the last critiques, then look at them on the blog. We are standing still if you do not improve each time you are on stage.
Louder, keep accents going throughout show.  Girls’ accents are good at the beginning, then fade and disappear throughout show.  It was suggested that we do not have as thick accents, then everyone will be on an equal level. MS. Kuehler is in charge of that – talk to her.
Men – you are not as strong as the girls – all men. With the exception of Len and Jim, the audience should hate you.  This does not mean yelling louder. It means your anger, your hatred toward WOMEN should be shown throughout your bodies, not just in your voices.
Women, help the men out by being more afraid of them. REACT
When Edwin is about to pass out, there is silent on stage PEOPLE NOISES before and after
Bar scene was flat. No people noises.  It is funny for the new girl – who thinks you are all insane – to have a chunk of meat on her leg. There were no PEOPLE NOISES.
Bar scene was a SILENT MOVIE
One liners – must hear sound effects
Girls look alike.
All girls lost accents.
Too many silent moments.
Girls overpower guys.
How do we see the two strong sides of Edwin and Arthur?
Women must be afraid of the men.
Bar scene – we must know it’s different. Loud drinking, etc.
Arthur, Lady H, Priscilla
Shoulders back, erect posture.  Better when girls are sitting, but standing you are slumped. Arthur, you have to have good posture all the time.
Edwin
Creepier from the get go.  We need to see you playing with the knife throughout – upper part of body.
Reread last critiques on stage directions for first and last scenes.
Len
What a woman was better. Close your eyes and see your lady with a smile - EXAGGERATE
Lantern scene
See lust – Edwin. Move Maggie out of the way of the lantern light and keep hands on her shoulders a little too long. Maids, take the lantern out so Edwin can look at Maggie more.
Lady H
Priscilla
Edwin
Arthur
People noises in your scenes.
Lady H and GG
Hanky scene – move more DS.  We need to reblock this scene.
Men
Use chains
Len and Edwin
Must see the lust in your faces, bodies when looking at your women.
Annie
Could not hear nor understand first line
Dark gloves, not white.
G G
Do not block lights in magic scene.
Girls cutting meat was too monotonous.
In gutting shed, how do you feel about the muck?  React whether it is bothersome, etc.
You have to react to Harry – you are scared to death of him.
When Ellen retells the story about her first day in service… when she begins, sigh.  React to hearing it again.
At the beginning, everyone needs to make noises according to what their job is.  Maggie and Ellen seem to be the only ones working hard.
React to hand shake – wipe hands on skirts, etc. EXCEPT for Maggie and Ellen who seem to take pride in getting her hands bloody.
We must hear Jesus in Annie’s song.
Song with sarnie scene needs to be earlier and stepped on Eady/Maggie’s last line. IT needs to sound like it did at the beginning – not pretty.  MAKE FUN OF THE QUEEN.
Fallen is a mishmash. Fallen women, must hear fallen – Polly- then it’s like dominos with girls.
Scene after Ellen has to take Jim’s place was too slow.
Awkward transition between Jim/Ellen and Ellen/Annie. Maggie, work behind the bar with Annie, then Ellen.
Accents were lost in Maggie/Ellen/annie scene
Moving chairs out during Priscilla and Lady H’s scene was too loud.
Transition problem with Jim being laid off and Ellen entering, then Ellen seeing Annie.
React more vocally and physically to being laid off – Polly reassures.
Begin earlier with Caps and gowns – maids help.
In knickers scene – cheat out to audience.
Arthur
Try to show more restraint. We need to see you trying hard not to lose your temper – see the struggle within yourself through your body, facial expressions.
Reread last critiques – cut one of the I’ll get you for this.
More fakeness speaking to Lady H
Polly and Priscilla
Great scene with mirror.
Hold hands or walk together after hat scene when exiting.
Nora and Emily
Good job in keeping busy, watching action, and moving stuff.
Lady H and Priscilla
Your prompt scene seems more your turn, my turn to speak – needs to be more natural.
Lady H, Harry, Edwin, girls
PEOPLE NOISES.  Girls whisper about ROYALTY visiting.   PEOPLE NOISES
Ellen
First line too high to understand.  Speak in soprano register throughout play.
Gawping – step on lines.
Think about kicking chain before stepping over it – see how this works /may or may not like it.
Ellen, don’t give up so easily on working for Jim. Don’t give up so easily on warning girls.
Sound
All sounds need to be ten times louder. The sounds need to sound like transition effects instead of problems backstage.
Thunder needs to be louder
Eady
Louder and slow down.
That’s our lot should be more sentimental than angry.
Eady and Maggie
We need to sense and see something of your relationship.  More eye contact.  Eady, not so emotional on your first line. We need to see the anger build – on both parts.
Maggie, move up so judge on right stage can see you. Sit on the short stool and move it up past the crate.
Ellen and Harry
Maggie
Make sure E does not see Harry when she is spouting. Harry, try to harm Ellen – Maggie protects.
Ellen Annie
Ellen, PEOPLE NOISES when Annie is telling her story.
Maggie
Soprano voice as well – screechy tonight. Especially with Edwin.
React to thunder during Edwin scene.
Kate
When you clean the chair, bring it down stage. It was covered by the table.
Bigger on guess we better go to club when Ellen says you will lose jobs
Polly
We will always have a job – reassure others – touch them.
Harry
Be careful about entering too early.
Stronger – more stern – possibly push girls in opening, NOT ANNIE.
Ellen, ever red – in disgust.  Spit after you say that.
Move gutting table after you exit the pub. We need a dif hat and coat. You also need gloves.
Stage lights
Why did lights go on and off?
Lights on the action.
Lights
In Annie/Ellen scene with her apartment, more light so we can see Ellen – not much.
Crew
If you are working, clean up after yourselves.  Dressing room was a mess with glue bottles.
Priscilla/Polly
Polly – seem nervous around Priscilla until Priscilla makes a face , then ask her if she wants to try on the hat.
Opening
Loved the discordant singing.
Edwin and Maggie
We’ll see about that PEOPLE NOISES.
Be confident at first, Maggie. Edwin makes a noise with chain. Scared, fight, Edwin makes a noise like a girl when she pulls the knife out, but it further enrages him because he has shown a weakness.  He picks himself up, brushes off his pants, turns, and threatens her. She runs off. Maggie, hold the knife so he can’t get it.
We’ll see about that – People noises from Maggie.
Polly
Bigger reactions seeing Arthur and Priscilla
Hat further up on back of head
Reassure during fired scene.
Priscilla
Enter between Gshed and Lady H’s house.
Don’t pull chains down.
Priscilla & Arthur
Enter between G shed and Lady H’s house.
Lady H
Nod when Nora does things correctly.
Need to do
Light on Edwin’s face with projector.

1.       Edwin’s faint needs work and he gets up too fast
2.       Every one move with slow movements when you are on stage and someone else is the focus.
3.       Len, more reaction to g g singing off your customers.
4.       PEOPLE NOISES
5.       Work on easier way to get knife out.
6.       Harry, push Ellen more after she gives news of being laid off
7.       People noises on maid training
8.       Edwin, ANGRIER when Maggie shows up at Lady H
9.       Scenes to work on
10.   Bar scene
11.   Edwin, harry, Arthur
12.   Knickers scene
13.   Opening
14.   Ellen/ Annie
15.   Eady/Maggie
16.   Men and women
